How I use DeepSeek.

Serious reasoning and code for pennies, as long as the data is not sensitive.

Where I reach for it first

Heavy reasoning where the budget matters. It will do the everyday work too, and do it cheaply.

Made by DeepSeek

None of this is a boundary. Every model here has written code, drafted copy, answered questions and been asked for an image. What follows is where each one has an edge, not what it is allowed to do.

DeepSeek

Serious reasoning and code for pennies, as long as the data is not sensitive.

Where it has an edge

  • Reasoning problems where the cost per call matters
  • Code review and refactoring on a budget
  • Batch jobs that run thousands of times
  • Work you can drive from an API without a large bill

How I prompt it

It thinks out loud by default, which earns its keep on a hard problem and wastes time on an easy one. I say plainly when a task is simple so it skips the long reasoning, and I give the exact output shape because it will add commentary around it otherwise. For code I paste the failing test rather than describing the bug.

Images

It does not make images. The newer versions will read one you send, which is enough for a chart or a screenshot.

Where it slips

It can reason itself in circles on a badly stated problem, and the servers sit outside the US and the EU, which rules it out for some client data. Ask about that before it goes anywhere near sensitive work.

The rest of the set

What I use alongside it

Not instead of it. Most projects end up using two or three of these together, because each one covers a different weak spot in the others.

Claude

I lean on it for long documents and code that has to hold together.

How I use it

Gemini

Long context, the Google stack, and a quick image when I need one.

How I use it

ChatGPT

The generalist I reach for first, and the easiest one to edit an image with.

How I use it

Grok

The one with live access to what people are saying right now.

How I use it

Ollama

Models running on your own machine, with nothing leaving the room.

Tell me what your team does by hand every week. I'll tell you honestly whether an agent is the right answer, what it would take, and roughly what it costs to run.
