How I use Ollama.

Models running on your own machine, with nothing leaving the room.

Where I reach for it first

Anything that cannot leave the machine. Everything else is easier on a hosted model. That is a trade, not a rule.

Made by Open source

None of this is a boundary. Every model here has written code, drafted copy, answered questions and been asked for an image. What follows is where each one has an edge, not what it is allowed to do.

Where it has an edge

  • Client data that cannot go to an outside API
  • Offline work, on a plane or a bad connection
  • Testing one prompt against several open models
  • Learning how a model behaves with no meter running

How I prompt it

Small models need simpler jobs and much more context in the prompt. I keep one file per task with the system prompt in it, and run the same prompt against three or four models before picking one. Low temperature and a strict output format make a small model far more dependable.

Images

Some open models generate images, but the good ones want a serious graphics card. On a laptop I use it for text and code.

Where it slips

A model that fits on a laptop is weaker than the hosted ones, and you become the person who updates it. Budget for real hardware and a little patience.

What I use alongside it

Not instead of it. Most projects end up using two or three of these together, because each one covers a different weak spot in the others.

Claude

I lean on it for long documents and code that has to hold together.

How I use it

Gemini

Long context, the Google stack, and a quick image when I need one.

How I use it

ChatGPT

The generalist I reach for first, and the easiest one to edit an image with.

How I use it

DeepSeek

Serious reasoning and code for pennies, as long as the data is not sensitive.

How I use it

Grok

The one with live access to what people are saying right now.
